Center of Environmental Activities

What do we want?

Especially a healthy and enjoyable environment;
tolerant relationships among people based on love and consideration;
a municipal government close to people’s needs; honesty in deciding about public matters;
better conditions for pedestrians and cyclists; fewer barriers on the roads, in the buildings, and among people; more playgrounds and sports fields, more events of all kinds;
 clean water; locally grown food without chemicals;
a minimum of waste and a maximum of greenery...

Who are we?

The Center of Environmental Activities (CEA)

is a civic association founded in 1994 that gathers people with an interest in environmental issues as well as a better quality of life in Trenčín.

What do we do?

Program of Environmental Education

Why Environmental Education?
Nature has been, is, and will be here.  If people destroy their environment, they destroy conditions of life for themselves and ....gradually become extinct. Nature remains...
If we – people – want to live here for a long time, we need to live in harmony with nature, not adjusting the laws of nature to our needs but the opposite. And that requires a change in our attitude towards nature and towards the environment – nature is our teacher and a life-giver, not our prisoner and slave.

The operation of the Environmental Education Center „Baranček“ (little ram) includes:

  • The services of an environmental library (about 2,000 titles) and a video-library (about 150 titles);
  • The improvement of a system of environmental education in schools on a national level (in cooperation with the Society of Environmental Education Organizations „Špirála“ and the Ministry of Education);
  • Pedagogical programs for teachers, publishing of pedagogical materials and teaching aids;
  • After-school activities for kids such as The Club Orchis;
  • Outdoor trips to protected landscape areas combined with nature-conservation work;
  • Educational and promotional activities for the public (Earth Day, Car-Free Day, TV-Free Week, etc.).

Trenčín 21 – program of Local Agenda 21

Why sustainable life in Trenčín?

It is our goal that “Trenčín 21” be a city which is nice to live in with functioning mobility; decent housing; a high quality of life; respect for nature, traditions and history; a mechanism of partner cooperation in making fundamental decisions (e.g. urban plans, big investments, etc.) with long-term effects on the lives of all citizens of Trenčín.

  • Project Indicators for Trenčín 21 – regular evaluation of 21 indicators – measurable criteria of the quality of life in Trenčín (e.g. the area of pedestrian zones, area of town greenery per capita, number of public toilets, etc.);
  • Project Traffic for Trenčín 21 – the implementation of specific traffic solutions in favour of pedestrians, cyclists and users of public transportation, e.g. by means of a petition for excluding 1% of Trenčín’s city budget for developing bicycle transportation;
  • Mobile exhibition of photographs from more than 40 cities, “Cities for People”, which shows numerous examples of traffic policies and solutions inspired by the concept of “gentle mobility”;
  • Publishing of a monthly newsletter “Trenčín 21” (together with an environmental NGO “Pre Prírodu” /For Nature/) that is distributed to every household in Trenčín (22,000 copies);
  • Publishing of the brochures, “Trenčín People and Quality of Life” and “Green to Bicycle Transportation in Trenčín”, and a card game, “A Place for a Good Life”.

The Program for Support of Ecological Farming

Why healthy and local food?
Because the food that comes from conventional - intensive - farming, contains various chemicals (pesticides, artificial fertilizers, antibiotics, gene modifications, etc...),
it is processed in a way that is detrimental to human health (radiation, conservation agents, antioxidants, etc...) and it goes hand in hand with the suffering of animals
 and the destruction of the environment.

  • Establishment of the club of friends of organic farming „Club BIO-papa“ that meets once a month and offers to club members local bio-products – potatoes, some vegetables and milk products.  The other club activities include: lectures, videos, exchange of information on new literature, events, etc.;
  • Establishment of a bio-food department (flour, pasta, tea, and other certified bio-products) in the shop, DORA, at Marka Aurelia street (only about 20 m from Mierové námestie);
  • Arrangement of baking of spelt bread in the bakery at Messerschmidt´s (also in Mierové námestie);
  • Implementation of a nation-wide project “BIO or Not to BE?” aimed at convincing general public about advantages of organic farming compared to intensive farming (establishment of a Center for Support of Organic Farming, construction of web sites, and preparation of a mobile exhibition of photographs).
